A Pickwick Portrait Gallery
From the pens of Divers Admirers of the most illustrious members of the Pickwick Club, their friends and their enemies
Chapman & Hall, Ltd., London, 1936
(the spine and dust jacket show Scribners)
243 pages and 16 tipped-in illustrations
Printed in Great Britain
Condition: The dust jacket has darkened heavily along the spine and has a small damp stain at the bottom (that didn't affect the book itself); there's also an open tear at the top of about 1/2"x3/4" and some red ink stains on the back cover. The DJ now has a plastic cover. The book itself is starting to age a bit, with some of the pages starting to tan. Something on the ffep was erased, leaving a light eraser mark. No other writing or dog-ears.
This intriguing book came from the estate of a Dickens collector. The binding looks amateurish to me, and only the top edge was trimmed, leaving the pages varying lengths at the bottom edge.
From the Foreword: "This album of Pickwickian portraiture, the work of various and distinguished hands, has been planned and prepared by the publishers as a tribute to the "Pickwick" centenary, and as a memorial to the hundred years' association under which the names of Pickwick and of Chapman & Hall have come down the generations to the present day, inseparably hand in hand."
