Civil War in Pictures by Fletcher Pratt
Garden City Books, 1955
Hardcover, 256 pages
This Good grade book is only "reader" quality or slightly better. I wouldn't call it collectible. The dust jacket has aged and become brittle. In addition to the usual bends and small creases at the edges, it has several small closed tears, one on the front is an inch long, the rest are smaller. There is a some soiling or rubbing to the DJ at the high spots, and several small light stains on the back. The lower corner of the front flap is price-clipped. The book itself has a straight spine, and the binding has held up reasonably well, with no inclination to flop open to any particular page. Pages are not loose, and have no writing or dog-ears. The biggest problem I can see is that the book was seldom dusted, and the dirt created heavy spotting on the top edge of the textblock. Yes, I've dusted it off. See the photo for the cover, additional information available on request.
"From the drawing boards of the newspaper artists who recorded the conflict." (from the front cover) In the 1860's, photos were not yet easily reproduced. Newspapers had to use drawings that had been reduced to woodcuts to illustrate their articles. Artists followed the Army (generally the North, as Southern papers weren't as likely to be illustrated) and recorded the battles.
